Najee Rivera, a 23-year-old African American man from Philadelphia, PA, tragically died on December 5, 2015, from injuries sustained during a shooting. Rivera was shot in the side during an altercation near the intersection of C and Somerset streets in Kensington. He was attempting to break up a fight between two women when a man, who knew the women, allegedly shot him.
Initially, it seemed Rivera might recover, but he succumbed to his injuries 15 days later at Temple University Hospital.
The incident sparked an investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department, but they faced challenges due to a lack of cooperation from witnesses. Rivera's girlfriend, Dina Scannapieco, took it upon herself to gather information and hired a private investigator to help identify the shooter. Despite her efforts, it took several months before any significant progress was made.
On April 25, 2016, the police announced the arrest of 23-year-old Khalil Henderson, who was charged with murder and related offenses in connection with Rivera's death. Henderson was identified as the shooter and had been on the police department's Most Wanted list. Witnesses confirmed that Rivera was shot while trying to intervene in the fight, and his death prevented him from testifying in a separate case against former Philadelphia police officers Kevin Robinson and Sean McKnight, who were acquitted of charges related to a 2013 incident where they beat Rivera.
The case against Henderson moved forward, and he faced trial for his involvement in Rivera's death. The community and Rivera's family continued to seek justice, hoping for closure and accountability for the loss of a young man whose life was cut short by violence.
