In the fall of 2018, a domestic dispute in Reading, Pennsylvania, escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving a family shattered and a community in search of answers. The life of Ranciel Natera, a 30-year-old man, was tragically cut short on November 5th of that year. The events that unfolded on that day were the culmination of a heated argument with his former girlfriend.
The conflict between Natera and Danishka Otero-Velez reportedly ignited after she discovered that he had fathered a
child with another woman. In the midst of their argument outside an apartment building, Otero-Velez produced a firearm and shot Natera in the chest. After the shooting, she allegedly followed two individuals who had witnessed the event into a nearby apartment, where she threatened them with the gun to ensure their silence with law enforcement.
Following the incident, Otero-Velez provided a false name to the responding officers and managed to evade immediate capture. She fled the state and sought refuge in Florida. However, her time as a fugitive was limited. Several weeks later, law enforcement located and apprehended her in Miami. She was subsequently extradited back to Pennsylvania in February of the following year to face the consequences of her alleged actions.
Danishka Otero-Velez was charged with murder, witness intimidation, and making terroristic threats. During a preliminary hearing in September 2019, a judge determined that there was sufficient evidence for her to stand trial on the murder charges. The case was then set to proceed through the court system, marking the next chapter in the pursuit of justice for the death of Ranciel Natera.
