Aanya Y. Ruiz, a 16-year-old girl of Hispanic ethnicity from Reading, Pennsylvania, tragically passed away on February 5, 2021. She was a 10th-grade student at Muhlenberg High School and was well-loved by her family and friends. Aanya's death was the result of a shooting incident that occurred in the Oakbrook Homes neighborhood of Reading.
The incident involved Abelle Ruiz, a 14-year-old boy who was later charged with the third-degree murder of Aanya and the attempted murder of her
sister, Aashyiah Cook, who was 17 years old at the time. According to police reports, the shooting happened after an argument between Abelle's girlfriend and the two sisters. Abelle Ruiz fired multiple shots, hitting Aanya in the back and Aashyiah in the leg. Aanya was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after arrival, while her sister survived her injuries.
Abelle Ruiz was arrested the following day and has been in custody since the incident. In October 2022, he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison. This case drew significant attention due to the young age of the perpetrator and the tragic loss of Aanya.
