In the spring of 2020, the life of 37-year-old Melissa Gonzalez-Torres was tragically cut short in what was determined to be a murder-suicide. On the afternoon of May 18th, inside her Reading, Pennsylvania, home on Robeson Street, Melissa was fatally shot by her estranged husband, 41-year-old Segundo Torres-Ortiz. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in a second-floor bedroom. After shooting Melissa, Torres-Ortiz then turned the gun on himself, ending his own life.
The tragedy unfolded in a house filled with family members, including the couple's children. Despite the presence of others in the home, no one reported hearing any arguments or signs of a dispute leading up to the fatal gunshots. The authorities' investigation pointed to a grim history of domestic violence that preceded the deadly event. Melissa had previously sought protection from her estranged husband, obtaining a Protection From Abuse order against him.
Segundo Torres-Ortiz had a history of violating this order and had been arrested on numerous occasions for doing so. In January of that year, he was incarcerated for breaking into Melissa's home in defiance of the PFA. He was subsequently released from Berks County Prison in late April, just weeks before the murder-suicide. The protective order had expired in April 2020, and it was not renewed. Following the incident, the children were placed in the care of relatives.
