In a quiet Homestead neighborhood, a dispute over something as trivial as a parking spot escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 39-year-old Calvin Walker of West Mifflin. The fatal encounter unfolded on the afternoon of Thursday, March 28, 2019, when a gathering for a funeral led to several cars lining an alleyway. This seemingly innocuous situation angered a local resident, setting in motion a chain of events that would end in gunfire.
The man, identified as 42-year-old Neil B. Chandler, reportedly became agitated that the vehicles were obstructing the alley. After an initial confrontation, he drove away, only to return on foot moments later, armed with a firearm. Without warning, he opened fire, striking Walker and another 40-year-old man. Both men were rushed to a nearby hospital, but Walker's injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The second victim was treated for his wounds and later released.
Following the shooting, a tense scene unfolded as law enforcement from multiple jurisdictions descended on the area. Investigators quickly identified Chandler as the suspected shooter and learned that he had retreated into a nearby house. A perimeter was established, and after a standoff, Chandler surrendered to police. He was taken into custody and subsequently charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and a firearms violation. He is being held in the Allegheny County Jail.
