In the summer of 2019, a burst of gunfire shattered the evening calm at a school playground in Southwest Philadelphia, tragically cutting short the life of 14-year-old Alfred James Williams. On Saturday, August 24th, in the schoolyard of William C. Longstreth Elementary School located in the Kingsessing neighborhood, the young male was struck by at least one bullet to the back of the head.
The shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on the 5700 block of Willows Avenue.
Police arriving at the scene found that others in the area had moved Williams from the schoolyard into the street. He was immediately transported to Penn Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, Alfred James Williams succumbed to his injuries two days later, on August 26, 2019.
Investigators at the scene recovered five or six shell casings, some within the schoolyard and others on the street, indicating the chaotic nature of the event. Authorities were uncertain if the teenager was the intended target of the violence that befell him in the fading daylight.
In the immediate aftermath, police began searching for a male suspect who was believed to have fled the scene in a burgundy Chevrolet Malibu. The investigation was aided by the presence of both private and school surveillance cameras in the vicinity, which law enforcement sought to access for leads. However, despite these initial details, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with the shooting. The case remains an open and painful chapter for the community, a stark reminder of a young life lost to senseless violence.
