In the early evening of April 28, 2020, in the Feltonville neighborhood of Philadelphia, 20-year-old Joseph Lee Humphrey Jr. was with 18-year-old Kalil Stafford in the 4700 block of North Third Street. Shortly before 6 p.m., gunfire erupted, and both Humphrey and Stafford were struck in the chest.
Philadelphia Police officers responded to a report of a person with a gun and discovered the two young men suffering from their wounds. They rushed both victims to Temple University Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, Joseph Lee Humphrey Jr. was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. Kalil Stafford succumbed to his injuries a short time later. Both Humphrey and Stafford lived in the vicinity of where the shooting occurred.
For over a year, the double homicide remained under investigation by Philadelphia Police homicide detectives. In the immediate aftermath, no arrests were made, and no suspects were publicly identified. The case was an active and ongoing investigation as authorities worked to piece together the events that led to the fatal shooting.
On October 25, 2021, a breakthrough in the case was announced. A suspect was arrested in connection with the murders of both Joseph Humphrey Jr. and Kalil Stafford. The individual taken into custody faced serious charges, including Murder and Conspiracy. At the time of the arrest, the case was pending trial.
