In the winter of 2023, a violent encounter in a Philadelphia deli tragically cut short the life of 42-year-old Karim Davis. A Black man known affectionately as 'Smoke' to his friends and family, Davis was a father who was deeply cherished by his loved ones.
On the afternoon of January 17, 2023, at approximately 12:49 p.m., the bustling sounds of the 2200 block of North Broad Street were pierced by gunfire. Inside a local deli, three men were struck by bullets.
Davis suffered a severe gunshot wound and was rushed to Temple University Hospital in extremely critical condition. Alongside him, a 39-year-old man was also taken to the hospital in critical condition with two leg wounds, while a 28-year-old man was in stable condition after being shot in his side.
For two days, Karim Davis fought for his life, but his injuries proved to be insurmountable. He passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2023. Born on May 19, 1980, Davis was a lifelong Philadelphian who was remembered for his kind nature and his love for his children and family.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and just under a month later, on February 16, 2023, an arrest was made in connection with Davis's death. The unidentified suspect was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and other related offenses. As of early 2026, the case was still pending trial.
