In the Logan section of Philadelphia, a sequence of violent events culminated in the death of 45-year-old Cody Hargett in October 2022. The tragic story began to unfold on the morning of September 20, 2022, when Hargett visited the residence of Talim Hunt on the 5200 block of Sydenham Street. For reasons that investigators were unable to determine, the visit took a violent turn.
Surveillance footage from a nearby home captured Hargett fleeing from the house, with Hunt in pursuit, firing a handgun. Hargett was struck twice in the right shoulder during this initial confrontation.
Nearly three weeks later, on the afternoon of October 9, 2022, Hargett returned to Hunt's home. The two men were seen outside conversing for several minutes before a physical altercation broke out. The situation escalated dramatically when Hunt produced a firearm and shot Hargett a total of nine times. In a final, brutal act, Hunt stood over the victim as he lay face down on the street and shot him seven more times in the back. Hargett was rushed to Einstein Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The investigation into Hargett's murder led police to identify Talim Hunt as the sole suspect. Investigators utilized cell phone location data which placed Hunt at the scene of both the September and October shootings. Further evidence implicating him was discovered on his phone. At the scene of the fatal shooting, police recovered an Apple AirPod and a lighter which both contained Hunt's DNA. Despite the evidence gathered, a clear motive for the shootings was never established by investigators.
On April 24, 2025, a Philadelphia jury found Talim Hunt guilty of First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault, and related weapons charges for his role in the shooting death of Cody Hargett, as well as the earlier non-fatal shooting. Following the conviction, Judge Roxanne Covington sentenced Hunt to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a legal conclusion to the violent and perplexing case.
