In the autumn of 2019, a horrific scene unfolded within a West Philadelphia home, forever altering the lives of a family. On October 30th, 18-year-old Sy-eed Woodson, along with his mother Janet Woodson, 51, his stepfather Leslie Holmes, 56, and his 7-year-old half-brother Leslie Woodson-Holmes, were found shot to death in their residence on Walton Avenue.
The discovery was made after Janet and her husband failed to show up for work, prompting a wellness check by police.
Upon entering the home through a second-floor window, officers discovered a deeply disturbing sight. The victims were found in different parts of the house, each having sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head. Sy-eed was found in a second-floor bedroom. The alleged perpetrator, Maurice Louis, who was Janet's 29-year-old son and Sy-eed's half-brother, was found inside the house, naked and drinking vodka. He confessed to the killings at the scene and was taken into custody without resistance. The weapon used, a shotgun, was recovered from the home. It was later revealed that Louis had purchased the shotgun the day before the murders.
Family members reported that Maurice Louis had a history of mental health issues, including depression. In the aftermath of the tragedy, it came to light that Louis had been involuntarily committed for psychiatric evaluation in 2018. The night before the killings, his mother had taken him to a local hospital due to his erratic behavior after he had stopped taking his medication, but he was not seen by a psychiatrist and was allowed to leave.
In January 2023, Maurice Louis pleaded guilty to four counts of third-degree murder and was sentenced to 40 to 80 years in prison. Subsequently, the estates of the victims filed lawsuits against the healthcare entities responsible for Louis's mental health care. In April 2026, a jury found a healthcare management company liable for its role in the events leading to the murders, awarding the families a multi-million dollar verdict. The lawsuit alleged that had the proper protocols been followed regarding his involuntary commitment, Louis would not have been able to purchase the firearm he used to kill his family.
