On May 13, 2021, Quamir Mitchell, a 16-year-old Black male from Philadelphia, PA, was tragically shot and killed in Southwest Philadelphia. Quamir was found lying in front of a residence on the 5600 block of Grays Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he succumbed to his injuries that evening.
A second victim, a 13-year-old Black male, was also shot but survived with a gunshot wound to his arm.
The incident occurred near the Deritis Playground, and police believe it may have started there. The 13-year-old victim was able to provide a description of the shooter, which led to the arrest of a suspect. However, the investigation is ongoing, and detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Quamir Mitchell was known as a talented basketball player and a good student at West Philadelphia High School. He was set to graduate in just a few weeks and was remembered as a role model for younger teenagers in his neighborhood. The community has been deeply affected by his loss, and efforts to address the violence and bring justice to Quamir and his family continue.
The Philadelphia Police Department has been actively investigating the case, and the community has come together to demand an end to the violence. Councilmember Kenyatta Johnson and the 12th police district captain organized a "Peace Not Guns" Public Safety Walk in response to the shooting.
