In the early morning hours of November 16, 2021, in North Philadelphia, 18-year-old Ahmir Jones was walking with her girlfriend on the 1700 block of Cecil B. Moore Avenue, just a few blocks from Temple University's campus. Their path was tragically intercepted by two individuals who announced a robbery. As one of the assailants grabbed the girlfriend's cellphone, the other fatally shot Jones in the chest.
She was rushed to Temple University Hospital but succumbed to her injuries less than two hours later.
Jones, a senior at Pottstown High School where she was a member of the varsity soccer team, had spent a significant portion of her life in the foster care system. Despite a challenging upbringing, she was described by family and friends as a 'fun-loving' individual who was turning her life around. She was living with a foster family in Pottstown and was looking forward to her future. Her death was a devastating blow to her mother, four sisters, and all who knew her.
The investigation into the senseless act of violence led Philadelphia homicide detectives to two 16-year-old males, Syneef Blackwell and Jameer Martin. Investigators connected them to the murder of Jones while looking into a string of armed robberies in the same area. The night before the fatal shooting, Blackwell and Martin had allegedly robbed four people at a nearby restaurant. The victims of that robbery came forward after learning of Jones's death, aiding police in identifying the suspects through surveillance footage.
Blackwell was taken into custody on November 28, followed by Martin's arrest on December 3. Both teenagers were charged as adults with murder, multiple counts of robbery, and conspiracy. Blackwell was held on $2 million bail, while Martin was held without bail.
