Angel Rivera, a 24-year-old Hispanic man, was a resident of Bleigh Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His life was cut short in a burst of gunfire in the city’s Olney neighborhood in the fall of 2021.
On the evening of Saturday, November 27, 2021, police responded to a call about a person with a gun on the 500 block of West Duncannon Avenue. Arriving around 7:10 p.m., officers found Angel Rivera on the street suffering from as many as 18 gunshot wounds throughout his body.
The officers placed him in their patrol vehicle and rushed him to Albert Einstein Medical Center, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators recovered no weapon, and no arrests were made. The case was investigated by Philadelphia Police for nearly two years before a significant breakthrough occurred. On August 31, 2023, police arrested a suspect in connection with the murder, leading to charges against two men for their roles in Rivera’s death.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was an act of gang-related violence. The two men charged, Chris Byard and Daquan Bishop, were identified as members of the "6600" gang who had been targeting members of a rival gang. A jury found both Byard and Bishop guilty of first-degree murder and related offenses for the killing of Angel Rivera.
Byard was also convicted in two other fatal shootings, and Bishop was convicted in one other. For their crimes, both men were sentenced to serve consecutive life terms in prison. As of February 2024, the case was officially closed with the conviction and sentencing of the two men responsible for Angel Rivera's death.
