On a cold winter’s night in Philadelphia, the life of 42-year-old Jemeel Mccoy was violently cut short. On January 2, 2022, on the 2500 block of North 28th Street, Mccoy, an African American male, was shot during a carjacking at approximately 9:23 p.m. Responding officers found him wounded in the street and rushed him to Temple University Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries early the next morning.
The investigation into Mccoy's death was part of a larger and more complex effort to dismantle a violent street group terrorizing North Philadelphia. For months, law enforcement had been building a case against numerous individuals for a spree of violent crimes that plagued the city from 2021 to 2022. This extensive investigation, involving a Philadelphia County Investigating Grand Jury, the Gun Violence Task Force, the Philadelphia Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, ultimately led to a significant breakthrough in Mccoy’s case.
In June 2024, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office announced charges against eight individuals for their roles in multiple homicides and non-fatal shootings. Among them was 19-year-old Nakye Williams, who was implicated in the murder of Jemeel Mccoy. Williams and his co-defendants, alleged to be part of the 'Big Naddy Gang,' were charged with a host of violent crimes, including murder, attempted murder, conspiracy, and related firearm offenses. The indictment alleged that Williams killed an individual during a carjacking on January 2, 2022, near the 2500 block of North 28th Street, which corresponds to the date and location of Mccoy's death. As of the announcement of the charges, the accused were in custody and awaiting prosecution.
