On May 6, 2023, at approximately 5:35 p.m., Philadelphia police responded to reports of gunfire in the 6700 block of Torresdale Avenue in the Tacony neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers discovered 44-year-old Juan Salcedo-Collazo with a fatal gunshot wound to the head; he was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:44 p.m. Nearby, 42-year-old Arthur Spiller was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the right abdomen.
Spiller was transported to Jefferson-Torresdale Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 6:15 p.m.
The double homicide was captured on surveillance video, which has been reviewed by Philadelphia homicide investigators. Despite the availability of this footage, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or announced any arrests related to the case. The investigation remains active, with police urging anyone with information to come forward.
In the wake of the tragedy, the National Gun Violence Memorial honored both victims, highlighting the loss to the community. Friends and family remembered Spiller as a "funny, silly, big-hearted, lovable, loyal" individual who was "fun to be around" and "loved life." The memorial also noted that Spiller was a father, further emphasizing the personal and communal impact of his untimely death.
