On November 29, 2021, 14-year-old Samir Jefferson was fatally shot 18 times while waiting for a bus at the corner of Rising Sun and Wyoming avenues in the Feltonville neighborhood of Philadelphia. Jefferson, a 9th-grade student at Thomas Edison High School, was unarmed when he was chased and attacked by multiple gunmen. The tragic incident occurred around 3:30 p.m., and despite his attempts to flee, Jefferson was overwhelmed by the attackers.
The investigation into Samir Jefferson's
murder led to the arrest of four suspects. Haneef Roberson, 20, was arrested in Oakwood, Georgia, in January 2022. In December 2021, Quadir Johnson, 21, and Kyair Garnett, 21, were also apprehended and charged with murder, conspiracy, reckless endangerment, tampering with evidence, and other offenses. Garnett faced additional charges of receipt of stolen property and unauthorized use of an automobile. The final suspect, Jahlil Williams, 23, was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 8, 2022, and was awaiting extradition back to Philadelphia.
The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation, but authorities believe it may have been related to social media taunts. The Philadelphia Police Department, along with the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI, worked diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice. The arrests brought some measure of closure to Jefferson's family and classmates, who continue to mourn the loss of the young boy who brought joy to their lives.
