In the early hours of October 2, 2023, the life of Josh Kruger, a 39-year-old male journalist and advocate, was tragically cut short in his own Philadelphia home. Kruger was shot seven times in his chest and abdomen at approximately 1:30 a.m. in his Point Breeze residence. Despite being able to make his way outside to seek help, he collapsed on the sidewalk and was later pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Hospital.
The initial investigation revealed no signs of forced entry into his home.
The Philadelphia police quickly identified a suspect, 19-year-old Robert Edmond Davis. An arrest warrant was issued, and Davis was taken into custody on October 25, 2023. Investigators described the relationship between Kruger and Davis as an acquaintance, with Kruger attempting to help the young man. However, details emerged suggesting a more complex and intimate connection between the two. Evidence from Kruger's cell phone indicated they were in a sexual relationship.
The family of Robert Davis provided a more troubled narrative, alleging that the relationship began when Davis was 15 and involved drugs and abuse. They claimed that Kruger had been supplying Davis with methamphetamine, which exacerbated his mental health issues. Furthermore, they alleged that Kruger had threatened to release sexually explicit videos of Davis online shortly before the shooting. Police did find methamphetamines in Kruger's bedroom.
In June 2024, Robert Davis, then 20, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, aggravated assault, and illegal gun possession. The plea was part of a negotiated deal. A judge sentenced him to 15 to 30 years in prison. Davis’s guilty plea also encompassed charges for a separate incident involving firing a gun at someone on a SEPTA platform. The resolution of the case through a plea deal meant that some of the more contentious details of the relationship between Kruger and Davis, which might have been explored at a trial, remained largely unaired in a courtroom.
