The investigation led to the arrest of William Arthur Strunk, a 76-year-old man from Monroe County. Strunk was charged with criminal homicide, possessing an instrument of crime, and carrying a firearm without a license. During the investigation, a .38 caliber handgun and ammunition matching the bullets extracted from Powers' body were found in Strunk's residence. Strunk confessed to shooting Powers four times with the .38 caliber gun.
