On February 21, 2021, 14-year-old Barry Mills Jr., a young boy from Chester Township, PA, tragically lost his life due to a gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred in the 1900 block of Tolston Street, where Barry was found and later transported to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide.
David Cobb, a 20-year-old man, was charged with criminal homicide, third-degree murder,
and related firearm charges in connection with Barry's death. According to witnesses, Cobb was "joking around" with a rifle when he accidentally shot Barry. Cobb reportedly turned himself in on March 10, 2021, and was held without bail at the George W. Hill Correctional Facility. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 25, 2021.
The case highlighted the severe consequences of handling firearms irresponsibly, especially during what was supposed to be a birthday celebration. The Delaware County District Attorney, Jack Stollsteimer, emphasized the tragedy of the situation, noting that two lives were ruined and two families were left grief-stricken. The incident served as a stark reminder of the importance of gun safety and the devastating impact of negligence.
Cobb faced serious legal repercussions for his actions, with the potential for a long prison sentence if convicted. The investigation involved multiple witnesses who positively identified Cobb as the shooter.
