Jeremy Andrews, 33, was a Black man from Birmingham, Alabama, whose morning on February 28, 2024 ended in violence inside a home in the South East Lake area. Just after 8:20 a.m., Birmingham police were sent to a residence in the 7800 block of 7th Court South on a report of a person shot. When officers went inside, they found Andrews unresponsive with what investigators described as an apparent gunshot wound, and Birmingham Fire and Rescue pronounced him dead at the scene.
As detectives began piecing together what happened, police said the moments leading up to the shooting started as a domestic dispute. Their preliminary account described an adult female and an adult male at the home in a verbal argument tied to domestic issues. At some point Andrews came to the residence, and the conflict escalated into a physical altercation between Andrews and the adult male, whom police referred to as the suspect. During that struggle, police said, the suspect shot Andrews. Investigators added that they believed both Andrews and the suspect were armed, a detail that immediately shaped how the incident would be viewed as the investigation moved forward.
In the immediate aftermath, officers took the suspected shooter from the scene to Birmingham Police Department headquarters. Police said the suspect was then booked into the Birmingham City Jail under a 48-hour felony extension for murder, a hold that allows investigators time to present findings while charges are evaluated. Even then, police language emphasized how early the case still was—an investigation that could shift as witnesses were interviewed and evidence was analyzed.
Within roughly a day, the legal direction of the case changed. Birmingham police reported that detectives presented the information they gathered to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, and that after review the district attorney’s office ruled the actions justifiable. With that ruling, police said the matter was reclassified as Justified Death Investigation #2, signaling that prosecutors did not move forward with criminal charges tied to Andrews’ death as described in the police account.
