Ireal Mitchell, a 22-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on August 8, 2016, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred following an altercation at a basketball court in the Lawndale neighborhood. According to reports, Mitchell had slapped the teenage stepson of Sirena Crosby, a 38-year-old African American woman, during a verbal dispute.
The teenager went home and informed Crosby about the incident.
In response, Crosby confronted Mitchell at the basketball court, where she allegedly threatened his life. She then returned home and instructed an unidentified man to retrieve a gun. Crosby and the man drove around the area in her silver Chevrolet Malibu, searching for Mitchell. They eventually spotted him crossing the street in the 800 block of South Springfield Avenue. Crosby, who was driving, reached out of the driver's side window and shot Mitchell multiple times.
Mitchell was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner's office determined that he died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide. Surveillance footage from a nearby business captured the shooting, and witnesses identified Crosby as the shooter. Crosby was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, and Cook County Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. set her bail at $3 million.
The case against Crosby included several pieces of evidence, such as surveillance footage and witness testimonies. Witnesses reported hearing Crosby threaten Mitchell's life and seeing her drive the car during the shooting. Crosby's next court hearing was scheduled for November 29, 2016.
