On August 31, 2022, Najeer Lane, a 22-year-old African American male from Allentown, Pennsylvania, was shot and killed. The incident occurred on the 1000 block of West Juniata Street, where Lane was discovered with a gunshot wound to his back and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lehigh County Coroner's Office later ruled his death a homicide. Lane was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Bless Jones, on their way to Trout Creek Park, when they were ambushed. Investigators determined that the suspects had arranged to meet Jones at the park before opening fire on the vehicle.
Following an investigation by the Allentown Police Department and the Lehigh County Homicide Task Force, three men were charged in connection with Lane's murder: Xavier Grenon, Legious R. Minder Jr., and Frederick A. Marks Jr. The charges against them included criminal homicide, conspiracy to commit criminal homicide, and aggravated assault. This violent act was not the first tragedy to strike the Lane family; Najeer's brother, Parris Lane, had also been shot and killed in Allentown in 2017. Family members expressed their profound grief, stating that 'gun violence has stripped our family of two precious gems'.
The legal process saw two of the three suspects held accountable for their roles in Najeer Lane's death. In 2025, Legious Robert Minder Jr. pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and other related charges. He was subsequently sentenced to 40 to 80 years in state prison. In February 2026, Xavier Grenon was found guilty by a jury of conspiracy to commit criminal homicide, attempt to commit criminal homicide, and aggravated assault. Grenon was also convicted for the attempted murder of Bless Jones, who managed to escape the initial ambush. Less than an hour after killing Lane, Grenon and his co-defendants reportedly went to Jones's home and fired multiple rounds at Jones and another individual, though no one was hit. Grenon faces a potential maximum sentence of 60 years in prison. The third suspect, Frederick Antwan Marks Jr., is awaiting trial.
