On a cold January day in 2021, the life of 28-year-old Dwayne Carter of Allentown, Pennsylvania, was tragically cut short. On January 26th, Carter was discovered inside his vehicle in the 200 block of North Jordan Street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
The Lehigh County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Carter's death was a homicide resulting from the shooting.
The investigation into the shooting uncovered a planned meeting between Carter and another man, 24-year-old Dondre Simon-Jeremiah of Easton. The meeting was arranged for a drug transaction. However, the situation took a violent turn when Simon-Jeremiah arrived with an unidentified person, leading to an argument between him and Carter. During the dispute, Simon-Jeremiah fatally shot the unarmed Carter, later claiming he mistakenly believed Carter was reaching for a weapon inside his hoodie.
Following the shooting, Simon-Jeremiah took a bag containing marijuana products from Carter's car and fled the scene. A collaborative effort between the Allentown and Easton Police Departments, along with the U.S. Marshals, led to Simon-Jeremiah's apprehension three days later in Wilson Borough. He faced charges of third-degree murder, robbery, and criminal conspiracy to commit robbery.
In July 2022, Dondre Simon-Jeremiah pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him. The legal proceedings concluded in February 2023 when he was sentenced to serve 28 to 60 years in state prison for his role in the death of Dwayne Carter.
