In the spring of 2016, a knock on an apartment door in Muncie, Indiana, set in motion a tragic chain of events that would end in the death of 24-year-old Rafael Angel 'Ralphie' Rodriguez. On the night of April 10th, Rodriguez was in his apartment in the 5200 block of West Canterbury Drive when his ex-girlfriend, 21-year-old Logan Jean May, came to his door. Believing she was alone, Rodriguez opened the door.
However, May was not there for a social call; she was the decoy in a planned robbery.
As soon as the door was open, two men pushed past May and forced their way into the residence. A struggle ensued, and in the chaos, gunfire erupted. Rodriguez was struck in the chest. Two other men inside the apartment were also wounded in the attack. The assailants' objective was to steal methamphetamine from Rodriguez. Despite being rushed to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Rodriguez succumbed to his injuries approximately two hours later.
The investigation into the homicide quickly led Muncie police to the orchestrators of the deadly robbery. Logan May was arrested and confessed to her role in the plan, admitting she had intended to steal meth from her ex-boyfriend and had provided one of the guns used in the attack. Her accomplices were soon identified and apprehended. Cody Allen Buck, 20, Mason Lee O'Neal, and 17-year-old Marcus Earl Wilson Jr. were all taken into custody.
The legal process brought a measure of justice for the murder of Rafael Rodriguez. Logan May was charged with felony murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery resulting in death. Cody Buck also faced charges of murder and robbery. Marcus Earl Wilson Jr., who was a teenager at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 45 years in prison. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of drug-related violence within the community.
