On July 4, 2020, Jose Melendez, a 27-year-old man from Allentown, PA, was fatally shot at Trout Creek Park. The incident occurred during a heated argument that began with a minor car accident involving Melendez and another driver. The shooter, identified as Kenith Otero-Ruiz, 24, fired multiple rounds from a .357-caliber handgun at Melendez, who was trying to crawl to safety behind his car. Tragically, Melendez succumbed to his injuries later that day at St.
Luke's University Hospital in Fountain Hill.
Following the shooting, Otero-Ruiz fled to his native Puerto Rico but was apprehended by authorities 10 days later. He was subsequently extradited to Pennsylvania to face charges. Otero-Ruiz eventually pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and related crimes, including the burglary of a grocery store where he stole the murder weapon, possessing a gun without a license, and fleeing from police. In September 2022, Lehigh County Judge Douglas Reichley sentenced Otero-Ruiz to 24 to 50 years in state prison.
The case drew significant attention due to the brazen nature of the crime and the subsequent international manhunt that led to Otero-Ruiz's arrest. The incident also highlighted issues of gun violence and the importance of swift justice in cases involving such severe crimes.
