On a spring evening in Allentown, Pennsylvania, a verbal dispute tragically escalated, leaving a family without a loved one. Jose Bermudez, a 43-year-old man, was shot and killed on May 14, 2021. The incident unfolded in the 100 block of North Hall Street shortly after 10:30 p.m. Bermudez was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:12 p.m. The cause of his death was determined to be a gunshot wound, and the case was ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Bermudez's death led authorities to a suspect, Raymond Bryan Gourgue. According to reports, Gourgue, who was 36 at the time, injected himself into a verbal argument that Bermudez was having with someone else. It was during this altercation that Gourgue fatally shot Bermudez in the back four times. For over a year, the case remained under investigation until Gourgue's arrest in October 2022.
Following his arrest, Raymond Bryan Gourgue was charged with homicide. In July 2023, a jury found him guilty of the murder of Jose Bermudez. Subsequently, in September 2023, a Lehigh County judge sentenced Gourgue to 20 to 40 years in state prison for his role in the fatal shooting. This conviction and sentencing brought a measure of closure to the case that had begun with a senseless act of violence on a May evening.
