In the summer of 1992, the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer was tragically cut short in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Deputy Sheriff Douglas Paul Hartman, a 31-year-old male who had served with the Lehigh County Sheriff's Office for two years, was killed in the line of duty.
On that fateful day, Deputy Hartman was assigned to serve a bench warrant.
The warrant was for a suspect in a theft case, and the address led him to an apartment complex located at 1943 East Dent Street in the city. While attempting to carry out his duty, a violent confrontation ensued. The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, opened fire on the deputy sheriff.
Deputy Hartman sustained a fatal gunshot wound during the encounter. The suspect in the shooting did not face arrest or trial for the murder of the deputy. Shortly after taking the life of Deputy Hartman, the individual responsible for the violent act took their own life.
Prior to his service with the Lehigh County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Hartman had been a member of the Lehigh University Police Department. His death was a significant loss to the law enforcement community and the residents of Allentown he had sworn to protect. He was survived by his wife.
