On a September afternoon in 2022, the life of 14-year-old Nicholas Elizalde was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. A freshman at Walter B. Saul High School, the male student played football for Roxborough High School because his own school lacked a team. On September 27, as he and his teammates walked from a football scrimmage, they were ambushed. Five assailants emerged from a parked SUV and unleashed more than 60 bullets into the group of students.
Nicholas was struck in the chest and died in his mother's arms at the scene. He was not the intended target of the attack, which also left four other teenagers wounded.
The investigation that followed led to the identification and arrest of multiple suspects. Authorities pieced together evidence, including a receipt for ammunition found in the getaway vehicle, to link individuals to the crime. The suspects identified and subsequently charged include Yaaseen Bivins, Zyhied Jones, Dayron Burney-Thorne, Troy Fletcher, Saleem Miller, and, nearly three years later, Zaakir McClendon. The motive for the shooting was not entirely clear, though police believe it was a targeted ambush, with Nicholas being an innocent victim caught in the crossfire.
The path to justice has been a long and painful process for Nicholas's family. Several of the accused have faced legal consequences for their roles in the shooting. Zyhied Jones, who was 17 at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, attempted murder, and other charges. He was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison. Troy Fletcher, who was 15 when the crime occurred, also pleaded guilty to third-degree murder and related offenses and received a sentence of 25 to 50 years in prison. The remaining suspects, including Yaaseen Bivins, Dayron Burney-Thorne, Saleem Miller, and the most recently arrested suspect, Zaakir McClendon, are awaiting trial. The community continues to mourn Nicholas, remembering him through a memorial garden and mural at Roxborough High School, honoring a life taken too soon.
