Bryan Scott Hurst, a 33-year-old male police officer with the Columbus Division of Police, tragically lost his life on January 6, 2005. Officer Hurst was working special duty at the Fifth Third Bank located at 6265 East Broad Street in Columbus when a robbery took place. The suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Daryl Lawrence, entered the bank, announced the robbery, and immediately opened fire on Officer Hurst.

Officer Hurst was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Columbus Division of Police for eight years. He is survived by his wife, Marissa, and their six-month-old daughter. The suspect, Daryl Lawrence, was apprehended three days after the incident and was charged with murder and three counts of bank robbery. He was convicted in federal court of murdering Officer Hurst and two counts of bank robbery. Lawrence was initially sentenced to death, but in December 2024, President Joseph Biden commuted his sentence to life in prison.
