MarShawn M. McCarrel II, a 23-year-old Black man from Columbus, OH, tragically died on February 8, 2016. He was a community organizer and activist involved in the Black Lives Matter movement. McCarrel was the founder of Pursuing Our Dreams, an organization dedicated to helping the homeless in Columbus. He was also known for his efforts in organizing protests against police brutality, particularly following the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
