Jeffrey Chandler, a 40-year-old man from Columbus, OH, tragically died on October 22, 2022, from a gunshot wound. Chandler was at the Platform Lounge on Country Club Road in east Columbus when he got into an argument with several other men. The altercation escalated, and the men moved outside. During the confrontation, 33-year-old Dominic Elmore pulled out a handgun and fired shots into the vehicle Chandler was sitting in.
Another man, 35-year-old Charles Williams Jr., ran to a nearby vehicle, retrieved a rifle, and fired multiple rounds at Chandler. Chandler managed to exit the vehicle and attempt to flee, but he was struck by another gunshot and pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the incident, both Elmore and Williams were arrested and charged with murder. Additionally, Lee Gill, who owned the bar and was present during the shooting, was identified as another suspect. Gill was later found guilty of tampering with evidence. Surveillance footage showed Chandler moving from the passenger seat to the driver's seat of the vehicle before falling out as the shooting continued. An autopsy revealed that Chandler was hit by a rifle round in the back.
The case drew significant attention due to the number of suspects involved and the circumstances of the shooting. Williams was found guilty of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence, while Gill was convicted of tampering with evidence. Elmore pleaded guilty to two counts of felonious assault and received a four-year prison sentence. Williams faced a minimum of 21 years in prison, and Gill faced nearly two years for tampering with evidence.
Chandler's death marked the 117th homicide in Columbus for the year 2022. The case highlighted issues of gun violence and the need for improved safety measures in public spaces.
