On December 7, 2016, in Toledo, Ohio, 15-year-old African American male Tommie Thomas was fatally shot at approximately 8:50 p.m. inside his residence in the 1000 block of Woodland Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered Tommie with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to ProMedica Toledo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:26 p.m.
Authorities arrested Tommie's 14-year-old sister, Tyanna Thomas, in connection with the shooting.
She was charged with murder and appeared in Lucas County Juvenile Court, where she was ordered to remain in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center pending further proceedings.
Investigations revealed that the siblings had been arguing prior to the incident. During the altercation, Tyanna retrieved a shotgun from another room and shot her brother. At the time of the shooting, both Tommie and Tyanna were students at Scott High School, with Tommie being a freshman who played football.
In court, it was noted that Tyanna had a history of legal issues, including a prior felony and multiple misdemeanors. Initially, she was sentenced to juvenile detention until the age of 21, with a suspended adult sentence of 15 years to life. However, while in juvenile detention, Tyanna was involved in several incidents, including an assault on a corrections officer. As a result, the court imposed the adult sentence, and she was transferred to an adult prison.
The tragic death of 15-year-old African American male Tommie Thomas marked the 35th homicide in the Toledo metro area in 2016 and the third killing of a juvenile in as many weeks, highlighting a concerning trend of youth violence in the community.
