On December 1, 2019, 17-year-old Brandon Bruce, a male of African American ethnicity, was fatally shot in the face in the 100 block of Furnace Street in Elyria, Ohio. Brandon was visiting a home with friends when the incident occurred. Elyria police responded to the scene around 8:40 a.m. and found Brandon in an unattached garage. Despite attempts to save his life, medical personnel declared him deceased at the scene.
The investigation led to the arrest of 17-year-old Dillon Meredith,
who was friends with Brandon and lived at the same address. Dillon was charged with tampering with evidence and having weapons under disability. He was initially held at the Lorain County Juvenile Detention Home, but the case was later moved to Lorain County Common Pleas Court. Dillon faced multiple charges, including reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter, and felonious assault.
In January 2021, Dillon was arrested again on weapons charges during a traffic stop. He was found with an unloaded handgun in his vehicle and was charged with having weapons under disability, carrying concealed weapons, and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. Dillon's trial for the fatal shooting of Brandon Bruce was scheduled for April 12, 2021, in Lorain County Common Pleas Court.
The tragic death of Brandon Bruce and the subsequent legal proceedings against Dillon Meredith have drawn significant attention to issues of youth violence and gun control in the Elyria community.
