On July 30, 2020, 29-year-old Woody Cisterna was fatally shot while picking up personal belongings at a home on Kenmore Boulevard in Akron, Ohio. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing Cisterna lying on the ground before seeing the suspect, Charles Deel, speed away in his vehicle. The Northeast Ohio Fugitive Task Force arrested Deel several days later in Scio, Ohio, about 90 minutes south of Akron.
Deel was found with the murder weapon in his possession.
Charles Deel, a 26-year-old man from Barberton, was later charged with the murder of Woody Cisterna. On May 31, 2022, Deel was found guilty by a jury of one count of murder with a gun specification and one count of felonious assault with a gun specification. Additionally, Deel was found guilty of being a repeat violent offender. On June 10, 2022, Deel was sentenced to life in prison with eligibility for parole after 21 years.
The tragic death of Woody Cisterna and the subsequent legal proceedings against Charles Deel highlight the serious consequences of violent crime and the efforts of law enforcement to bring perpetrators to justice.
