Angelo Jones Jr., a 29-year-old African American male from Akron, Ohio, was shot and killed on June 3, 2012. The incident occurred in East Akron near the 1100 block of Tarson Terrace at approximately 4:45 p.m. Jones was struck in the abdomen by gunfire while walking in the area. In an attempt to escape, he managed to get into a vehicle and drive away but ultimately crashed at Rosemary Boulevard and Ericsson Avenue.
Emergency responders transported him to Summa Akron City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
At the time of his death, Jones was free on bond and awaiting trial on charges of rape and kidnapping involving a 14-year-old girl. The allegations stemmed from an incident that took place in Akron the previous July, in which the teenage girl claimed that Jones and another man sexually assaulted her during a gathering. Jones had maintained his innocence and was determined to fight the charges in court, refusing to accept any plea bargain. His attorney, Jon Sinn, stated that Jones was adamant about his innocence and was prepared to go to trial. Sinn also noted that the victim’s family harbored strong feelings against Jones, believing in his guilt.
Despite the circumstances surrounding his legal troubles, authorities did not immediately establish a motive for the shooting. No suspects were identified in connection with his death, and police had not made any arrests. Investigators continued to seek information from the public, urging anyone with knowledge of the incident to come forward. Anonymous tips were encouraged through local law enforcement channels.
Jones’ sudden death left his family and loved ones in mourning. He was survived by his parents, Carolyn Reliford and Angelo Jones Sr., as well as his grandparents, siblings, and several children. His funeral services were held at Dominion Family Church in Akron, where friends and relatives gathered to pay their respects. The loss of Jones, coupled with the unresolved nature of his homicide, added to the grief experienced by those close to him.
