Patterson, a 41-year-old resident of Warren, was responsible for his murder. Patterson was convicted of shooting Bernard at the Riverview Apartments on December 1, 2021. The incident occurred just days after Patterson had shot another man in the groin, who survived and later testified against Patterson. Patterson was sentenced to 44 to 49 and a half years in prison for the murder of Bernard Owens and the shooting of the other man.
The case highlighted the challenges faced by law enforcement in communities where cooperation with police is often lacking. Judge Ronald Rice emphasized that if the man shot by Patterson had identified him as the shooter, Bernard Owens might still be alive.
