Irvin Adan Gonzalez-Martinez, an 18-year-old male from Raleigh, NC, was tragically shot and killed on June 6, 2015. The incident occurred at a city park on Collegeview Avenue, not far from NC State's campus. Gonzalez-Martinez, a former Athens Drive High School student, was with two friends, Daniel Pittman and Jose Valdovinos, at the time of the shooting. While Pittman was injured and later treated at WakeMed, Valdovinos managed to escape unharmed.
Unfortunately, Gonzalez-Martinez succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Raleigh Police Department quickly identified and arrested four individuals in connection with the murder. Louis Mondragon, 20, and Enrique Valenzuela, 22, were charged with the murder of Gonzalez-Martinez. Both men were also charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, related to the shooting of Pittman and the shots fired at Valdovinos. Mondragon and Valenzuela shared an apartment in Raleigh and were known to their neighbors, who reported suspicious activities and frequent police visits.
Additionally, Leonardo Steven Calvillo, 20, and Maria Guadalupe Nambo, 21, were charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Calvillo and Nambo were accused of helping Mondragon evade capture by booking a motel room under Nambo's name and assisting with payment. Both Calvillo and Nambo were also charged with two drug-related violations that emerged during the homicide investigation.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but Raleigh police have stated that the incident was not random. The suspects were last seen fleeing the scene in a red four-door sedan. Mondragon and Valenzuela are being held in the Wake County Detention Center without bond, while Calvillo and Nambo are also in custody. The case has brought some relief to the community, as residents hope for justice for Gonzalez-Martinez and his family.
