The incident occurred at a residence on Spanglers Spring Way, where police responded to a shooting call early in the morning. Upon arrival, officers discovered two men dead inside the house. The other deceased individual was identified as Frederic Wade Wheeler, a 28-year-old white male.
Authorities determined that the fatal shooting was a murder-suicide, with Wheeler dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Witnesses reported that the events leading up to the shooting began with an argument at a local bar. Shauna Chmura, a friend of Wheeler, recounted that they had gone to the bar and encountered her friends, including Nye. An argument ensued, and Chmura eventually left and returned home. While she was upstairs checking on her children, she heard a gunshot downstairs. When she came downstairs, she found Nye on the floor with his girlfriend next to him, sobbing, and Wheeler standing over him with a gun. Chmura attempted to save Nye's life by performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but her efforts were in vain. Wheeler, who appeared to be depressed, then went upstairs and took his own life.
The investigation revealed that Wheeler had recently purchased two guns and had expressed a desire to teach Chmura how to shoot for self-protection. However, Chmura had kept the guns locked up. The shooting was not considered a random act, and police confirmed that there was no ongoing threat to the community. No arrests were made, as the primary suspect, Wheeler, had already taken his own life. The incident left two families grieving and Chmura struggling to come to terms with the horrific events that had unfolded in her home.
