Shane Simpson, a 16-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on December 20, 2015, in Wilmington, North Carolina. The incident occurred at the intersection of Castle and 11th streets, where Simpson and five other individuals were walking when they were struck by gunfire from a passing sedan. Wilmington police responded to a ShotSpotter alert and found Simpson lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other five individuals, also teenagers, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into Simpson's death revealed that the shooting was gang-related. Tyrek Desmond Anderson, 17, Deandre Nixon, 16, and Anthony Slaughter, 21, all African American males from Wilmington, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting. Shaquan Lannell Palmer, 22, was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder as well. Anderson and Nixon were tried as adults due to the severity of the crime, despite their young ages.
The case faced numerous challenges, including limited cooperation from the community and technical issues regarding Miranda waivers, which led to the suppression of certain statements at trial. Despite these obstacles, the investigation continued, and Anderson eventually pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. He was sentenced to 58-82 months in prison, with credit for time served. The charges against the other suspects were dismissed due to a lack of evidence and decreased participation from the surviving victims.
