Zalleux Johnson, an 18-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on February 21, 2019, in Wilmington, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the Creekwood South neighborhood, where Zalleux was shot on the 700 block of Emory Street. Wilmington Police Department officers responded to a ShotSpotter notification shortly after 11 p.m. and found Zalleux with a gunshot wound.
He was immediately transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Zalleux Johnson had previously been identified as a validated gang member. In early 2018, news reports had linked him to a 2017 armed robbery, for which he was sentenced to a maximum of two years for felony robbery. He was released after serving six months in November 2018. The Wilmington Police Department confirmed that the victim of the February 21 shooting shared the same name, age, and birthday as the teenage gang member reported on by WECT.
The investigation into Zalleux Johnson's death is ongoing. Wilmington Police have not yet made any arrests or identified any suspects in connection with the shooting. The community remains on edge as authorities continue to search for leads and gather evidence to bring those responsible to justice.
