Johnny Jermaine Johnson, a 43-year-old African American male, was tragically killed on November 7, 2021, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Johnson, a local nightclub owner and promoter, was found with a gunshot wound near his club, Dior’s Bar and Lounge, located at 141 N. Front St. Despite the efforts of officers who arrived on the scene and provided aid, Johnson succumbed to his injuries. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m.
on Chestnut Street, close to his establishment.
Johnson's death was a significant loss to the community, as he was known for his generosity and involvement in charitable activities. He had moved to Wilmington from the New York metro area to escape the violence and had opened his nightclub during the pandemic after receiving a $4.2 million settlement from a wrongful prosecution in a 1996 case. Johnson had spent 17 years in prison before being released and had since dedicated himself to building a musical business career and helping his family.
The Wilmington Police Department arrested two suspects in connection with Johnson's murder. Quajon Canty, 25, and Naulege Johnson, 22, were taken into custody without bond. Both men were charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The investigation revealed that the suspects had planned to rob Johnson of valuable jewelry when he walked to his vehicle after his club closed for the night. Surveillance videos, cell phone information, and ballistics testing linked the men to the crime. Gunshot residue testing and DNA evidence further confirmed their involvement.
The case against the suspects progressed through the legal system, with both men eventually pleading guilty to their charges. Naulege Johnson was sentenced to 28 to 35.6 years in prison for second-degree murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon. Quajon Canty also pled guilty and received a similar sentence. The community mourned the loss of Johnny Jermaine Johnson, remembering him as a free-hearted individual who always greeted others with kindness and generosity.
