Demetrius TaQuon Greene, an 8-year-old African American boy, tragically lost his life on February 17, 1997, in Wilmington, North Carolina. The circumstances surrounding his death were deeply distressing and involved a series of violent events that led to his untimely demise. Demetrius was a victim of a shooting incident that also claimed the life of another individual, Tyrone Baker.
The events leading up to the shooting were rooted in a series of criminal activities and confrontations involving the perpetrator, Shan Carter.
Shan Carter, who had a history of illegal drug possession and sales, was involved in several break-ins and burglaries in Wilmington, including one at the home of Tyrone Baker. This burglary resulted in the theft of approximately $35,000 in cash, which Carter referred to as "death money." The theft led to a series of violent confrontations between Carter and those who had been wronged by his actions. One such confrontation occurred in late November 1996, when Baker kidnapped and assaulted one of Carter's associates in an attempt to recover the stolen money.
In early February 1997, another confrontation took place between Carter and Keith Lamont Richardson, whose home Carter had also burglarized. This confrontation, along with the ongoing tension between Carter and Baker, culminated in the tragic events of February 17, 1997. On that day, Carter, driven by a desire for retribution and fueled by the escalating violence, shot and killed both Tyrone Baker and Demetrius Greene. The shooting was a result of premeditation and deliberation, as well as the doctrine of transferred intent, which held Carter responsible for Greene's death even though he may not have been the intended target.
Following the shooting, Carter was indicted for the first-degree murders of both Baker and Greene, as well as for discharging a firearm into occupied property and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In a capital trial held in February 2001, Carter was found guilty on all counts. The jury recommended a sentence of death for each murder, and the trial court entered judgment accordingly. Carter also received consecutive sentences for the additional charges related to the shooting.
