On November 2, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m., 67-year-old Mark Thomas Paz, an employee at the Monkey Junction Walmart in Wilmington, North Carolina, was fatally shot while attempting to intervene in a shoplifting incident. Paz, along with other employees, confronted a suspect identified as 35-year-old Dean Michael Newman, who was allegedly attempting to steal merchandise. During the confrontation, Newman produced a firearm and shot Paz, who succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
