Quayshon McRae, a 25-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on August 16, 2018, in Wilmington, North Carolina. The shooting was allegedly the result of an argument between McRae and Trent Williams, who believed that McRae had shot at his wife's car the night before.
Trent Williams, a 22-year-old male,
was arrested in September 2018 and charged with first-degree murder and possession of a stolen firearm. During the arrest, law enforcement searched Williams' home and found two firearms and 26 grams of marijuana, leading to additional charges against Williams' wife, Leah Faulk, for possession of stolen firearms and possession with intent to sell drugs. The case against Williams went to trial in October 2021, with pre-trial motions revealing issues with evidence and discovery.
Williams ultimately entered an Alford plea for one count of second-degree murder. An Alford plea allows a defendant to maintain their innocence while avoiding a trial by acknowledging that the prosecution has enough evidence to secure a conviction. Williams was sentenced to approximately 18 years in prison. The New Hanover County District Attorney's Office noted that while there were many witnesses to the altercation, few were willing to cooperate with authorities in identifying the perpetrator. This lack of cooperation complicated the case, but the plea deal was made possible by the testimony of a few witnesses who did come forward.
