Sayvor Almondre Cromartie, a 20-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on June 19, 2019, in Wilmington, NC. On that fateful day, Sayvor was at his grandmother's house, nursing a hurt foot from a roofing job injury. His grandmother, Janice Vaughn, had left the house to run errands, and upon her return, she found Sayvor gone. Shortly after, Sayvor's mother, Shalonda Vaughn, received a call informing her that her son had been shot.
She rushed to the scene on South 11th Street, where she found Sayvor in an ambulance. Despite her efforts to comfort him, Sayvor succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Sayvor's death revealed that he was shot outside a house on South 11th Street. The Wilmington Police Department has not publicly classified the incident as a homicide, and no charges have been filed against the shooter. The police have informed the Vaughn family that they know the shooter's identity, but they have not disclosed any details about the circumstances surrounding Sayvor's death.
Complicating the investigation, Shalonda Vaughn was charged with assault inflicting serious bodily injury in connection with an altercation that allegedly occurred after Sayvor's shooting. The New Hanover County District Attorney's office announced that no one would be charged in Sayvor's death. The DA's office stated that had Sayvor survived the shooting, he would have faced numerous criminal offenses for the events of that day. Several individuals associated with Sayvor were charged in connection with the incident, including Vandarian Canty, James Chase, Jacob Chavis, Treyquan Corbett, and Walter Kinlaw.
