Akir Samad Hooper, a 34-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on May 19, 2017, in Forest City, North Carolina. Alongside him, Stephanie Lynn Walker, a 37-year-old Caucasian female, was also shot and later succumbed to her injuries at Rutherford Regional Hospital.

The suspect, described as a biracial male with a medium build, was familiar with the victims. He was seen wearing camouflage bandannas, dark clothing, and carrying a black semiautomatic weapon. Jose Angelo Gonzalez, a 51-year-old male from Sunrise, Florida, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder in connection with the deaths of Akir Samad Hooper and Stephanie Lynn Walker. The arrest was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Forest City Police Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Sunrise Police Department. Gonzalez was taken into custody and held without bond, awaiting extradition to North Carolina.
The investigation into the double homicide was extensive, involving numerous interviews and crime scene analyses. Authorities believe that the motive behind the murders was personal, given the suspect's familiarity with the victims.
