Orlando Ronell Daniels, a 36-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on October 1, 2018, in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. According to reports, Daniels was shot multiple times by his stepson, Davajiha Najee Quemon Hoey, during a family altercation. The incident occurred at 137 Chambwood Lane, where Daniels was found lying in the driveway with multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite being rushed to Atrium Health in Shelby, Daniels succumbed to his injuries.
The altercation began when Hoey arrived at the family home and started arguing with family members. Daniels, attempting to defuse the situation, told Hoey to leave. However, Hoey allegedly shot Daniels moments later. The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office described the incident as a "senseless, cowardly murder" committed by Hoey, who was 20 years old at the time. Hoey had a criminal history, having been released from jail in June 2018 after serving time for possession of a firearm by a felon, felony breaking and entering, and larceny after breaking and entering.
Following the shooting, law enforcement launched a manhunt for Hoey, who was eventually arrested in Gaffney, South Carolina. He was taken into custody without incident and extradited back to North Carolina, where he faced charges of first-degree murder. The case drew significant attention due to the tragic nature of the crime and the impact on the family, who lost both a father and a son in the same incident.
The legal proceedings against Hoey included a court appearance where he was ordered to be held without bond. The Cleveland County Sheriff's Office continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, seeking justice for Daniels and his grieving family.
