Maurice Demetrius Simpson, a 40-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on October 17, 2019, in Greenville, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the 3000-block of Bell’s Fork Road near the intersection of Herman Garris Road. Maurice was found dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound. The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call and immediately began their investigation.
The investigation revealed that Maurice Simpson was shot and killed by his
brother, Marcus Mackey, who was 35 years old at the time. Marcus Mackey was taken into custody at the scene and charged with an open count of murder. He made his first court appearance the following day at the Pitt County Detention Center, where the judge set a $2 million bond. Funeral services were held on October 27, 2019, at Mt. Pilgrim Disciples of Christ in Scranton, NC, followed by interment at the Simpson Family Cemetery in Beaufort, NC.
