Nekeia Lavette Whittington, a 37-year-old African American woman from Laurinburg, North Carolina, tragically lost her life on May 27, 2020. The incident occurred in the afternoon when Laurinburg police officers responded to a disturbance around 3:50 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Whittington had been struck by a vehicle and had also sustained a gunshot wound.
She was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation revealed that Whittington, along with her son Tiquan Reheim McDonald, her daughter Tiquashia Dna McNeil, and her sister Sheronda LaToya Shaw, were involved in an altercation with Andrea Michelle McCrimmon. The group had followed McCrimmon to a residence on Alpha Street, where they attempted to block her in the driveway. During the confrontation, McCrimmon tried to drive away, and McDonald and Shaw began firing at her vehicle. Whittington was struck by one of the bullets during the exchange.
As a result of the investigation, several arrests were made. Sheronda LaToya Shaw was charged with discharging a weapon into an occupied moving vehicle, attempted first-degree murder, discharging a firearm in the city limits, and possession of a firearm by a felon. She was given a $250,000 bond. Tiquan Reheim McDonald was also charged with discharging a weapon into an occupied moving vehicle, attempted first-degree murder, and discharging a firearm in city limits, with a $250,000 bond. Tiquashia Dna McNeil was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and injury to personal property and was released after posting a $10,000 bond.
The investigation into Whittington's death remains ongoing, with further charges and suspects possible. The Laurinburg Police Department continues to seek information from the public to aid in the resolution of this case.
