On the evening of January 24, 2025, Jasmine Smith, a 17-year-old Black female from Laurinburg, North Carolina, was tragically killed. Police responded to a shooting incident at approximately 8:25 p.m. in the 300 block of E. Vance Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered Jasmine lying unresponsive in the front yard of a residence. Scotland County EMS was dispatched to the scene, but she was pronounced deceased.
The Laurinburg Police Department launched an intensive homicide
investigation, which soon led them to identify two suspects. On February 7, after obtaining arrest warrants, SWAT teams from the police department and the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at a residence on Crestline Road. Their target was 18-year-old Jordan Ray Jacobs, who was believed to live there. Officers searched the home but were unable to locate him.
The investigation continued and led officers to a secondary residence on Pea Bridge Road in Laurinburg. Both SWAT teams proceeded to that location, where they found Jacobs and took him into custody without further incident. He was transported to the Laurinburg Police Department for processing before being moved to the Scotland County Detention Facility. Jacobs was formally charged with first-degree murder.
At the same time, authorities announced they had also obtained a warrant for 19-year-old Isaiah Ja’Resse Patterson of Hasty Road, also for first-degree murder. For several days, Patterson remained at large, and police warned the public that he was considered armed and dangerous. A cash reward of up to $1,000 was offered for tips leading to his arrest. On February 10, Patterson surrendered himself to the Scotland County Sheriff's Department after deputies arrived at a relative’s home.
Both Jordan Jacobs and Isaiah Patterson are now in custody. Following their arrests, both men had first appearance hearings in court and were appointed attorneys to represent them. As of February 2025, they were both being held in the Scotland County Detention Center, charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jasmine Smith, and were awaiting disposition hearings.
